 It's good knights

It's good knights

WELCOME to our new-look back page.

Each week this page will feature a wrap-up of many of the local games.

As the title, Freedom of Speech, suggests, it gives me a chance to let you know my opinion on sporting moments as well as giving the reader a brief insight of the weekend’s results.

Special mention has to go to Wollondilly Knights Australian Football Club this week.

Knights president and player Russell Andrews said his team scored three goals in the last five minutes for a great win.

Shaun Paget scored the winning goal.

Following two heavy defeats against the South Coast Australian Football League frontrunners, Bomaderry and Northern Districts, the Knights showed some determination on Saturday to get back on the winning trail by beating Nowra.

In a close game the Knights held on by just four points.

In Group 6 Country Rugby League first grade, Picton gifted Camden their first win of the season on Sunday at Kirkham Park.

Plagued by injury this season, the Magpies went down 22-18.

Picton coach Noel Woods is hoping his key players recover in time to get the team’s campaign back on track.

‘‘We’ve just had a horrific run of injuries, especially to important players,’’ Woods said.

Playing against the wind in the second half, Picton surrendered their eight-point lead as Camden used a good kicking game to pile on the points.

To Picton’s credit, they tried to even the match in the dying minutes but a resolute Camden defence threw everything at them to hang on for the win.

The Magpies play host to Narellan on Sunday at Victoria Park.

Thirlmere/Tahmoor continued their winning ways, beating Oakdale 32-8.

Picton Rangers could have a fight on their hands to make the finals this year.

Coming off a 10-0 win the previous week against Warilla, Picton travelled to South Coast United. Failing to repeat their form in front of goal, Picton couldn’t stop United’s

Dennis Jurgevic from banging in two unanswered goals.

Wests Tigers fans were dealt a blow last week when Brett Hodgson announced he will leave the club at the end of the season.

He has signed a two-year deal with Huddersfield Giants. His replacement will have big shoes to fill.
