IT'S been more than two decades since Wilton was first considered as a possible site for Sydney's second airport and it seems nothing much has changed.
Last week, Phil Costa and Judy Hannan labelled the idea as ``stupid'', ``ridiculous'' and ``absolute madness''.
Phil seemed shocked that Wilton was still on the cards and couldn't believe anyone would want to put an airport in a water catchment area so close to national park lands.
And when Judy said the State Government had enough trouble getting people on trains in Wollondilly let alone planes, she was right on track (excuse the pun).
If they can't provide the infrastructure and services to keep commuters happy, then how on earth can they accommodate thousands of international passengers?
Wilton has changed a lot since the 1980s when a second airport was first on the cards.
Since then more houses have been built and the Bingara Gorge development has begun.
I'm sure 18 holes on Ernie Els's golf course in Bingara will be a different experience if it was directly underneath a flight path.
There are some who are supporting the airport because they think it will help the business case for the completion of the Maldon-Dombarton rail link.
From what I understand, the people who pushed for the line originally wanted it to reduce pollution and take freight trucks off the road. I wonder how much pollution would accompany an international airport?
Yes we live in a growth area but the reason people move to Wollondilly is to get away from noise, traffic and pollution.
And it's obvious we don't have the infrastructure to support such a plan.
Sometimes it feels as if Wollondilly doesn't exist until the Government is looking for a space to dump something such as an airport or power plant.
If Wollondilly is so important to the Government why on earth do we have so much trouble getting things like reliable public transport or a cultural centre out here?
Instead of just using us as a dumping ground perhaps they could start by giving us the simple things we deserve.
