WHEN I was first approached to enter the 2007 Picton Showgirl competition I must admit I wasnt sure if I had what it takes.
I'd never entered a contest like this before and I wasnt keen on being judged in front of hundreds of people at our show.
After careful consideration (and an encouraging push from my Mum) I decided it would simply be a good experience.
To some friends it was considered to be one of my more crazy ideas but I still managed to find an army of supporters to help me through the process.
Last Thursday I met with the other contestants - Julia, Katie and Kelly - at Dreamcatcher Lodge in Picton for the judging.
Following an interview, we were marked on our table manners over a specially prepared dinner (with produce from Wollondilly).
It was then that I realised I was with three very beautiful, talented and caring young ladies who would be excellent showgirls and representatives of our shire.
It was interesting that in the same week that one Sydney radio station promoted Picton girls in a very derogatory song, I met three of the most lovely young ladies I have ever met.
Each of them had their own strengths and while we were all very different I had no doubt in my mind that my three fellow competitors were all showgirl material.
The final judging took place on Saturday night at our very first Picton Showgirl dinner.
Each girl took her turn to speak about how we support local agriculture and industry. When we took the stage for the judges decision I could see a hall full of family members and friends holding their breath.
When I heard my name called as runner-up I was very happy and a little surprised, given such a strong field of competitors.
Our new Picton Showgirl, Kelly Meiklejohn, was a very worthy recipient who I believe will do a wonderful job representing our shire at the zone championships in February.
Through this whole process I learned there was one thing that every competitor needs to get them through a table or two of loving family and friends who will always support you even in your craziest endeavours.
