Timely treatment

PETER Bittner has been on 300 missions as a paramedic for NRMA CareFlight.

He has been working with the team for 18 months as part of the head injury retrieval trial, based in Westmead.

The three-year trial is a clinical experiment aiming to prove that the delivery of trauma physicians to accident scenes would improve outcomes for head injury patients.

Mr Bittner said that after the succession of child drownings in NSW last year, including one at Bargo, he was called to a job in Holsworthy.

``It was a 14-month-old male found face down in the spa,'' he said. ``The parents initiated CPR until the ambulance was there to treat him. We took over, transported him to Westmead Children's Hospital and a week later he was discharged and now has a normal life.''

On Sunday, September 14, Wollondilly will hold a Community CareFlight Day to raise money for the life-saving service which visits our shire on a regular basis.

Tahmoor Oval will be a hive of activity with lots to see and do. Meet the CareFlight team when the helicopter lands in the oval.
