WOLLONDILLY Shire Council's area maintenance officer spends one third of his week cleaning up graffiti and vandalism.
A council spokeswoman said the problem (examples are pictutred) had increased rapidly over the past few months and had peaked during the school holidays.
``The only way we can stop this destruction is to report it to the police,'' the spokeswoman said. ``If you witness incidents of vandalism or suspect that you know who is responsible, tell the police. We have many beautiful parks, playing fields and community halls in Wollondilly and these are being defaced daily.''
The council's manager of facilities and recreation said children in the shire were witnessing inappropriate language and drawings on walls. He said this was unacceptable.
The manager said theft was another continuing problem and that five lighting bollards were stolen from Tahmoor on Sunday night costing $4000.
``Shrubs that have recently been planted are also stolen or just vandalised,'' he said.
The council spokeswoman said vandalism was reported every day in the shire.
``People have been burning playground equipment and slashing seats on swings as well as indulging in many other destructive activities,'' she said.
``This also takes an area maintenance officer about two days every week to attend to and that doesn't include the cost of replacing these items.''
To report vandalism, call the Police Assistance Line on 131444 or if you see somebody engaged in any illegal act, call Picton police on 46778999.
