THE season has ended for another year for Group 6 Country Rugby League, with Thirlmere/Tahmoor beating Oakdale 19-16 in the grand final on Sunday.
It has been a strange season in many ways for Group 6.
The competition was in turmoil just weeks before the league was due to start when last year's premiers, Goulburn, withdrew and were replaced with Appin.
Appin were in and then they were out and eventually fielded a team in the DNC Cup.
In Appin's place, DNC Cup stalwarts Narellan were propelled to the elite league.
The Jets officials were not happy with the decision and protested to the Group 6 committee, but to no avail.
Concerns about becoming the whipping boys of the league had the Jets behind the eight ball before their opening game.
In fairness, the Jets surpassed many rugby league pundits' expectations.
They gave rivals Camden a shock during the season, winning the three derby games against the Rams.
The Jets managed to score the same amount of points as Picton (308) but allowed too many points to be scored against them to be serious finals contenders.
One of the season's highlights was the Roosters' undefeated run. Their only blemish was a draw against Picton.
The Roosters also won the club championship, Peter Jensen took out the player of the year award and Jason Sampson won the top try scorer and highest point scorer awards.
Group 6 was hit with another blow recently when secretary of 15 years John Dayball announced his retirement.
He has contributed to Group 6 not only as a secretary, but as a player, senior referee, and Country Firsts manager.
Dayball is also a life member of Group 6.
Meantime, some fans have been left scratching their heads at the decision to allow all six teams to qualify for the finals this season, but the hint of an additional two clubs playing in first grade in 2009 could alter the current finals format. Hopefully Group 6 can persuade even more clubs to compete in next season's first grade competition.
Camden had some consolation in missing out on the grand final this season.
Rams' coach Jason Hazelton took out the coach of the year award and Neil Begovitch won the Gary Dowling Rising Star Award.
The Rams beat Picton three from three in the regular season, but failed to grab a victory when it mattered most in the play-offs.
